The Westbury Bypass

The map shows the main curiousity about the bypass, which is that it
goes through the best countryside escatly the opposite side of town from
teh employment areas.
The road is 5.3 km long. While the map
shows the full length, this drawing shows approximately 3 km through a
Special Landscape Area of Wiltshire. The salient features are:
- The road runs close to the Westbury White Horse
- It runs on a raised ledge through parts of the Wellhead Valley
- The Wellhead Valley is home to 13 out of the 17 UK bat species
- Dormice have been found by consultants in the ancient hazel coppice near the Wellhead itself
- The woods on the hill beneath the Salisbury Plain are an SSSI
- The Wessex Way runs above the road, parallel to it
- The valley and its woods are currently very quiet, but the road will bring
58-75dBels of traffic noise, depending where you are standing. Walks
in the area will never be the same again...
